Prisoners
Runaway children are attracted to the cities in Russia
and arrive in their hundreds monthly. Many are arrested
at railway stations and kept in custody until returned
to their homes or orphanages near their homes. Others
who have no papers are found places in orphanages
near to the point they are picked up. Those not found
in their early days in the city turn to prostitution;
drugs and many crimes associated to these and may
eventually be caught and put into a detention centre.
It is a sad fact that many children leaving orphanages
end up in prison. Unprepared for life outside of an
institution they may become involved in crimes involving
theft, prostitution and violence. The authorities in
one of the prisons where Love Russia works informed
us that 80% of the inmates at any given time are orphans.
