Katya

Children's Homes

The home that Katya lived in was running with damp on the walls causing the paper to fall off. The roof leaked constantly and the beds were damp and smelt of urine caused by traumatised children. The director cried when offered help with the roof, decoration, new beds, mattresses and much, much more.
In another home Tolya and his friends continued to struggle up from the river carrying buckets of water as the supply had failed again and they had been without water for more than a week. Love Russia was able to fund a well and a pump providing sweet water all the year round.

Facts: Consistent lack of funds over many years makes the renovation of neglected buildings ranging from old monasteries to purpose built 1960’s homes a huge undertaking for directors and education authorities. Love Russia helps by providing fifty percent of the funding to encourage the authorities to make a start. Provision of new toilets, showers, laundries, kitchens, bedrooms, and more with their fifty/fifty model has galvanised Directors into action. One Director says “It just needed someone to believe we could achieve the impossible and to lend a helping hand- just look at us now”.  Innovative campaigns to replace beds, bed linen and other essential furniture items has produced a much higher standard of living for the children.
